Si on parle d´une chose imprécise, on utilise l' article indéfini.

Dans ce cas-là il a rencontré un ami quelconque, nous ne savons pas de qui il s' agit.

Dans cet exemple il ne va pas rencontrer un ami quelconque, il va rencontrer un ami bien défini.
